My partner and I were the only ones responsible for roughly 200 miles of highway, along with the small towns scattered throughout that territory. 01:03 Our dispatcher, Nancy, was a woman in her 60s who had worked there since the department first opened. 01:08 No matter what kind of call came through, she always managed to keep her voice perfectly composed. Both drivers' belongings remained undisturbed, and both people had reported hearing screams shortly before disappearing. 03:24 While I waited for backup, I began recording every detail. Even now, whenever I am driving alone after dark and hear an unfamiliar noise beyond the highway, I wonder whether he is still somewhere out there, preparing another ambush and playing another recorded scream to entice someone into the darkness. 15:27 Story two. 15:29 It has been seven months since that night on Willow Street, yet I still feel pressure closing around my chest whenever I have to drive anywhere near that neighborhood. 15:38 My name is officer Emily Carter. I've served on the suburban police force for approximately eight years. And until then I believed I had already encountered everything our peaceful little town could possibly put in front of me. 15:51 Domestic disturbance calls were nothing unusual in my work. When dispatch sends you to a home after reports of a violent fight, you expect the noise to continue in some form. More yelling, someone crying, or perhaps a television turned up to an unreasonable volume to smother the tension afterward. 17:41 Instead, the house was completely silent. 17:44 With every light shining and no one moving inside, it seemed as though the building itself had gone still and was waiting. 17:51 I advised dispatch that I had arrived, then walked toward the entrance. A heavy-duty padlock, the type normally used to secure a storage unit, had been fastened to the outside of the door. 19:42 Someone had attacked it with a hammer. That hammer was still on the floor while the damaged lock dangled crookedly from the broken hasp. 19:50 The portion of the frame surrounding it was covered in new scrapes and deep cuts. 19:55 In several places, the damage had stripped away the white paint and exposed bare wood. Whoever had fought to open that door had been desperate, striking from one angle after another until the lock finally gave way. 20:07 Before going downstairs, I requested backup. The closet was packed with men's clothing, methodically sorted according to color. 23:49 Inside the dresser was an assortment of watches, rings, and wallets. I understood that they were trophies, most likely taken from the husbands or boyfriends of his victims. 23:59 A police scanner sat switched on atop the nightstand. Next to it, an open laptop displayed the University of Michigan student directory. 24:07 But the part of that bedroom that has never left me was the wall behind the bed. 24:12 Dozens of social media photographs had been printed and fastened across it. Her car keys sat clearly visible on the table beside her, attached to an unmistakable pom-pom keychain. 25:06 We established a perimeter around the area immediately, while K-9 teams followed the trail from the destroyed bedroom window. 25:13 But that bastard had prepared his escape as carefully as everything else. 25:17 A rope ladder was already secured to the window frame. It descended to the roof of a shed, which gave him access to a fence bordering the wooded land behind the subdivision. 25:27 About a quarter of a mile into the trees, the dogs lost his trail at a creek. Nearby, we located tire impressions that appeared to have come from an ATV he had hidden there beforehand. 25:38 The contents of the shed proved that he had anticipated the possibility of being discovered. 25:43 We found bags packed with clothing, cash and several different currencies, hair dye and three sets of forged identification. 25:52 Every ID carried his photograph but listed a separate name.
